Background (not the question)

I'm not a hacker, I'm a terribly lazy guy who prefers to download 10 GB Virtual Machine (1 click) than to install a few packages to get software running (stuff never works for me the first time).

I'm spending Xmas with my family and I wanted to synchronise Monero blockchain. Monero uses anonymous protocol I2P and as it was synchronising my WiFi was dropping, now it cannot connect at all.

I speculate ISP is observing the packets an does not like privacy stuff and has banned my MAC address.

(phone and another laptop connected to the same WiFi are working just fine)

Question: looking for a powerful external WiFi dongle

Additional use case - 1 hour WiFi limits at the aiport - yes please. I'm not a hacker, so https://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=cracking_wpa is slightly outside my technical expertise.

Which dongle to buy?

EDIT / UPDATE: Changing MAC address works like a charm. Now I can connect to my home WiFi. I still want to buy an external WiFi adapter, this time around the main criterium is POWER and readily available external antenna. Use case: I sit in a nuclear bunker faraday cage workspace and have 10m USB extension with my WiFi card attached.

You can change your MAC address without any need for a separate hardware dongle. That aside, your ISP is not snooping on your connection and banning your MAC address, if nothing else for the simple reason that that data is not exposed to them. Trying to circumvent WPA security won't accomplish what you want anyways, but I'd be willing to bet changing your MAC address does. – JMY1000 Jan 6 '18 at 7:52
  • WOW. Thank you for an instant reply! Didn't realise I can change my address like that... sudo ifconfig en0 ether d4:33:a3:ed:f2:12 - IT WORKS - what a bullshit, can I haz my time back? – Mars Robertson Jan 6 '18 at 8:00
