I work with Maya/3DsMax and Redshift/Vray (usually Redshift, rendering on a graphics card).

I need to buy a powerful mobile workstation so I can render things quickly.

Which parameters should I look for when searching for a laptop for this? Are there any machines designed especially for these tasks?

Thanks!

  • What's your budget? What sized scenes? Do you need portability? Battery life? Why not a desktop? Tell us your requirements so we can tell you what you need.

  • Don't forget Quadro Nvidia graphics series or FirePro AMD series is more efficient instead of gaming series graphics such as Nvidia GTX. Commented Jul 5, 2018 at 11:57

I express my opinion about GPU for a designer and its workstation:

Workstation graphic card is more efficient than gaming series for designing and rendering.

So then I prefer to you buy a workstation series laptop (e.g. in HP workstation ZBook series, In ThinkPad workstation is P or W series and in Dell workstation is precision or latitude series)

NOTE: Don't forget Quadro Nvidia graphics series or FirePro AMD series is more efficient instead of gaming series graphics such as Nvidia GTX.

NOTE: But usually the Quadro series is more expensive.

This depends entirely on what program you're using. See this video; in some cases it helps massively, in others not so much.

A Google search for Redshift Vray takes me here: https://www.cgdirector.com/best-hardware-for-gpu-rendering-in-octane-redshift-vray/

Quote:

To use Octane and Redshift you will need a GPU that has CUDA-Cores, meaning you will need a NVIDIA GPU. VRAY-RT additionally supports openCL meaning you could use an AMD card here.

The best bang-for-the-buck NVIDIA cards are 1070 GTX (1920 Cuda Cores, 8GB VRAM), 1080 GTX (2560 Cuda Cores, 8GB VRAM) and the 1080 Ti (3584 Cuda Cores, 11GB VRAM).

,

As a "mobile workstation", the ideal choice is going to be something expensive with dual GPUs, typically referred to as SLI.

If you are serious about high GPU performance, you will go with a heavy luggable beast of a gaming laptop with two full-size desktop 1080 GTX or TI GPUs crammed into it, rather than the low power mobile (xxxM) versions.

This will likely cost you more than US$2500 for the laptop, and it won't be a small sleek device, but huge, thick, and heavy, with large air vents all across the back.

There are many examples to choose from, just do a search of your favorite web commerce site for laptop GTX 1080 SLI.

  • There aren't any "mobile (xxxM) versions" of the Pascal based GPUs...
