I have been using a rather ordinary wireless red laser mouse without any mouse pad. The only thing that makes me unhappy about it is that when desk dust gets on the laser emitter surface, the tracking becomes jerky. I then have to clean the emitter with a wet cotton bud (yes I do wipe the desk regularly too) which makes it run fine for another day or two until I have to do it again.

It's 2021 now and I am wondering if desktop mouse technology has advanced enough to free me from that pain. Are there any new models that are less susceptible to dust or even dust proof?

Good quality yet thin (3M) selotape... I have one in mine workshop and while dust collects around the tape, It does not get to the optic...
