I would like to control the direction of 220 V rated DC motors. I have tested it using relay to switch ON and OFF and it works fine . but to reverse the direction of this large motor ,I should have use motor drivers . I have L298 in my hand . can I use L298 for this purpose??

Did you read the specifications for the SparkFun L298? It states maximum voltage as 48. Also, motors have significant voltage and current over-shoot on switching on and off. These IC's cannot drive a 220 V motor.

What are you trying to do? Just directional control or speed control?

  • You'd need controller that handle at least ten times the power, depending on current rating of the motors. The electric vehicle motor controllers on this page start at US$1,300 : evwest.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=1 – DrMoishe Pippik Sep 12 at 20:01
  • what about using relays ( two relays) with this L298 motor driver ?? – Amare.m Sep 14 at 9:44
  • How would a relay act as a speed control? – DrMoishe Pippik Sep 15 at 17:27
