I just shucked my Seagate Expansion 4TB portable HDD hard drive and I was looking for another enclosure to house the drive. However, all enclosures I've ordered only fit the 2.5" SSD/HDD size, and other enclosures are made to fit the large internal 3.5" HDD drives. When I measure the shucked Seagate HDD, it measures to about 2.75" x 4". The issue is that the drive is 0.5" in height vs. an SSD at 0.25".

Can anyone make a recommendation on an enclosure that will fit this model? Thank you! My Current Model of Seagate Expansion HDD 4TB

  • What do you measure exactly? The size of the box (this would be irrelevant) or the size of the hard disk? – Arseni Mourzenko Jul 12 '19 at 8:58
  • This is the size of the actual hard disk itself after it has been shucked from the original Seagate casing enclosure. – Chris Donley Jul 13 '19 at 20:10
  • That's probably a 12.5mm thick drive (the standard uses metric even though it is a "2.5 inch" drive). At the very least you should be able to use one of these if it is a normal SATA connection. Enclosures for 2.5" drives are often built to fit the drives that also fit laptops, which is usually a maximum thickness of 9.5 mm. I'm sure a 12.5mm enclosure exists, but less common. – Romen Dec 13 '19 at 18:18

As weird as it sounds, 2.75 inches is 2.5 inches, so your hard disk drive will go into any 2.5 in. enclosure.

There is the Wikipedia page which lists disk form factors:

2.5-inch

2.75 in × 0.197–0.75 in × 3.945 in [...]. The 2.5-inch drive format is [...] widely used for HDDs in mobile devices (laptops, music players, etc.) and for solid-state drives (SSDs), by 2008 replacing some 3.5 inch enterprise-class drives.

In order to be sure, I even grabbed an old SSD, SanDisk SSD Extreme PRO 240 GB 2.5". It measures indeed 2.75 inches.

  • Arseni, thank you! That resolves one issue, but my apologies because I should have been more specific in my initial question. The height of the drive is about 0.5” versus my Samsung Evo SSD which is 0.25”. I’ve edited my original posting to include a photo of the shucked HDD vs the SSD. It seems I can only find enclosures for the slim SSD. Any recommendations? – Chris Donley Jul 15 '19 at 0:43
